Cian and His Santa Cruz Bronson

Cian has been working at the shop since after he bought his bronson during Covid. He started off washing bikes and is now one of our part-time bike assemblers and mechanics! If you come in and see all the bikes that are on our sales floor, chances are Cian built quite a few of them. Although he has a full time job elsewhere, he still makes time once a week to come and hang out with us (and assemble some bicycles too). Cian has a ton of energy, and always has something funny to say. He is also super creative and has crafted a beautiful bike frame light from a broken bicycle frame that you can see in our store's coffee corner. It is designed, built and hand painted by Cian. He also created our metal Santa Cruz bike that is pictured below. You can find this in our downstairs service center!

"My bike journey began like many others. I started off with a cool looking Walmart bike that I got for Christmas. Back then I thought all bikes were the same besides how they looked. After owning multiple bikes, I couldn’t find a bike that could handle the rough terrain I would put my bike through on the trail. My first bike ended up with broken brake cables and a bunch of brake parts everywhere trying to fix them. The second ended with a bent suspension fork. Lastly, the third bike, I rounded off the square bottom bracket spindles. Each of these bikes I rode until they were broken and unable to be ridden. After riding for more than 10 years I decided it was time for an upgrade. When Covid came around, I decided this would be the perfect time. Like everyone else, I had a lot of spare time and there was no better place to spend that time than the outdoors. Excited and eager for a new bike, I began researching full suspension bikes that would be able to fulfill my needs on the trail. During my research I found the bike company Santa Cruz, which ended up being the most appealing bike company to me. I loved this company’s craftsmanship, logo/design, and team spirit. So, after many nights of staring at the same bike on their website I chose the Santa Cruz Bronson 3 S kit. I decided this bike would be my new “recliner of the trail” as my coworker Jackson calls full suspension bikes. The closest Santa Cruz dealer to my location was Mystic Cycle Centre but, sadly, they didn’t have a Bronson there so they would have to order it. I wanted this bike so badly, but because it was during Covid it was nearly impossible to get a new bike shipped. So, I decided to be patient and to wait many months for my bike to come in.

The day I picked up that bike I was so excited, and little did I know how much that bike would change my life for the better. Without that bike I wouldn’t be writing this and wouldn’t have met all the great people at Mystic Cycle Centre. One memory I have of that day was when Chris, one of the bike shop owners, showed me how to take the wheel axles out to take the wheels off. This was a feature none of my previous bikes had. This one simple, mechanical feature interested me enough to apply for my first job at Mystic Cycle Centre. From there I became a bike washer and then after a few summers I was promoted to a bike mechanic. Throughout that time, I rode my recliner as often as I could and took great care of it, cleaning it after every ride. One of my favorite rides was at Pomfret Forest with many people from the shop. Pomfret Forest is a very exciting trail network with lots to do, including many features and trails for all skill levels.

After many rides I decided to improve my drive train with a XX1 gold chain and cassette. I also replaced my destroyed GX derailleur. In addition, I added new grips and a 3D printed battery holder that attached to my water bottle cage for a bright flashlight I made. Besides that, everything else is stock but tires and brakes. Those upgrades are in the near future. Throughout owning this bike, I always wanted to hang it on the wall like a picture because of how beautiful it was. So, in high school I decided to create a metal 2D cutout to put up on the wall so I could always look at my bike. In addition, I made another for the shop which you can find downstairs in one of the windowsills. Throughout my time at Mystic Cycle Centre, I’ve made many friendships on the trail, and off, which have changed my life. Thank you, Mystic Cycle Centre"
